1.         Prominent lateral projections on abdominal segments 1-8 (Fig 2.9.1); no prominent notch on the
            lateral margin of the mesonotum. Rare. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Pteronarcys cf. biloba

2.         Large lateral projections on abdominal segments absent (Fig 2.9.2); prominent notch on the             lateral margin of the mesonotum. Nymphal females have the projection on the tenth tergum             projected postero-dorsad to a point; nymphal males have the projection extended postero-            ventrad with a peg on the caudal surface. Mature male nymphs have a nearly rectangular                         projection posterad on the ninth abdominal sternum . . . Pteronarcys dorsata* or P. pictetii*

* These species are indistinguishable as larvae (but see Myers & Kondratief, 2017). However DNA analysis demonstrates that both are present in Ohio (DH Dean, unpub. observ.).
